Michigan born social media star turned musical powerhouse Mahogany LOX brings everything you could want to the table. She's got the talent, the voice, the comedy, the relatability and the vibes. After releasing her track Take Your Man which racked up 1.7 million videos on Tik Tok and 14 million streams on Spotify, Mahogany LOX is back with her newest single SIKE.
I know you’ve created a name for yourself through YouTube and Instagram, then branching out to Vine and now TikTok, but what pushed you in the direction of music?
I’ve loved music all my life and heavily influenced by LMFAO, I just waited for the right time to start sharing my music with the world!
With having such musical family members, did that have anything to do with your interest in music?
I’ve always wanted to sing but having a musical family definitely made my passion grow more!
How has your style evolved over the years as you’ve explored music and started recording your own? Who are your musical influences?
My musical style hasn’t evolved too much! I’ve loved Hip Hop and Rap ever since my brother 8ky introduced it to me when I was very young & I also love R&B and Pop, which inspires my music too! Hmm, I would have to say my musical influences are Mariah Carey, LMFAO, Y.G., Spice Girls, Destiny’s Child and so many more!
What did it feel like releasing “Take Your Man” and seeing the viral success it had on TikTok?
Seeing “Take Your Man” take off on TikTok like it did was so amazing! I still can’t believe it. I’m so thankful for everybody who showed it love!!
What inspired your new single “Sike?”
I wrote “Sike,” so the person who’s singing it can sing it to themselves and feel confident!
You’ve said “just know that you’re amazing and some people only want to bring you down because they want to be like you.” Being such a public person, how do you deal with those who try and put you down? Did it bother you at the beginning and does it still bother you now?
Actually, when I said… “just know that you’re amazing and some people only want to bring you down because they want to be like you,” I wasn’t speaking about myself specifically but to any person that gets negative comments. This is the reason I wrote “Sike,” which is a confidence anthem.
When you’re writing, do you start with the lyrics and then build the music around them or do you create the sound first, then write the lyrics according to the music?
Honestly, every writing session is different. Sometimes I hear the beat first, sometimes I know exactly what I want from the jump, but most of the time, I have an idea or a topic I want to talk about and go from there!
If you were to give advice to somebody reading this interview who wanted to explore music, what advice would you give them?
Make music that you would love to listen to. Study which genre you have the most passion for: hip hop, rap, R&B, pop, etc.. Study the art of songwriting. Decide if you want it to be a hobby or a career. And the most important thing is to… give it your all!!!
Keep up with Mahogany LOX on her social media!
