Review: King Mala "Hurricane" Single
Written by Caroline Moll
Alternative soul band King Mala has just released their first single, Hurricane, and it is the soulful yet eerie track you need in your life. Its aesthetic is Baz Luhrmann’s Great Gatsby meets Marian Hill and we are here for it. While the band identifies as alternative soul, the track has hints of rock and pop that allow it to draw in any potential listener and give them something in return. Although vocalist Areli Castro drives the track with her evocative lyrics, it is the simple drum beat - leaving the listener in a feeling of suspension - paired with distorted guitar riffs that truly transform it from alternatively classic to eerily beautiful.
This single leaves us patiently awaiting the arrival of their soon-to-be-released second single. Yes, they are alternative soul, but this band simultaneously refuses to be restrained by genre. They are dipping into styles outside of that realm with ambient instrumental and expressive vocals perfect for that in-your-feels time of day (or, for consumers of the soulful style, any time of day).
Keep an eye out for more from this artist; you don’t want to miss it!
